01 / MEASURE
Measure your spool, not a brand average
A loaded spool contains filament, the spool itself, and anything attached to it. A tare is the mass of that empty configuration. A catalog value can be a starting reference; it is not a measurement of your exact spool.
A repeatable measurement record
- Follow your printer’s instructions to remove and secure the spool. This guide does not describe printer operation.
- Use a stable surface and the scale’s instructions. Record repeated readings, its stated accuracy, and any known calibration issue. Resolution alone is not accuracy.
- Record the spool design and everything on the scale: labels, adapters, clips, or other attachments. Match these when finding a tare.
- Use your own matching empty spool if available. Differences between nominally identical spools remain possible. Widen the tare range if your reference is uncertain.
- Enter bounds that cover the uncertainty you can justify. The tool cannot discover systematic error or choose those bounds for you.
Original arithmetic example
Illustrative inputs: loaded spool 318–322 g; matching empty-spool estimate 198–206 g. Available filament is 112–124 g. The lower bound uses 318 − 206; the upper uses 322 − 198. These are invented teaching numbers, not a physical experiment.
If the tare is unknown
Do not enter zero simply to obtain an answer. Obtain a defensible reference or leave the decision unresolved. If every plausible loaded weight is below every plausible tare, our tool rejects the input. If the ranges overlap, it limits the physical lower bound to zero and flags that overlap.
A narrower range is useful only when supported by better information. Precision in the form is not precision in the measurement.
